  1. Wait, this can’t be right.

You’re telling me Leeds haven’t always sold out every single game forever and ever?

Being able to wake up on a Saturday morning and decide to go to watch us was a pretty nice perk of us being wank.

15th in the attendance chart a decade ago and today, you’ll never sing that

  4. It’d be interesting to know what the capacities for all of these are / how full each number is as a percentage.

  5. Running through the teams that appeared in both seasons:

    1. Leeds United (+14,266)
    2. Ipswich Town (+11,299)
    3. Middlesbrough (+9,970)
    4. Bristol City (+9,244)
    5. Leicester City (+8,999)
    6. Millwall (+5,897)
    7. Watford (+5,234)
    8. Hull City (+4,399)
    9. Huddersfield Town (+4,316)
    10. Birmingham City (+3,679)
    11. Sheffield Wednesday (+1,889)
    12. Blackburn Rovers (-115)
    13. Cardiff City (-1,962)

Only 2 decreases out of 13, with one of those decreases only being by about 100 people. Most have gained a few thousand, up to Leeds gaining nearly 15k fans.

  6. So if I’m reading that right, even with the cost of living issues every single team still in the championship have increased their attendances in the last decade, most of them significantly. The teams on there now in the prem obviously have also, and even Bolton in league one are averaging 20k now.

    Except for Blackburn.

Amazing that those in charge still say they’ve “done everything they can” – whilst charging the 4th highest ticket in the league, with the Ceo saying after just missing the playoffs that our only ambition is to develop younger players and just stay in the league and managing to outdo themselves every transfer window with a new “administration error” that we’ll “definitely learn from” in the future.

God I hate my club. Rant over!

  7. Sunderland count attendance as tickets sold, which means any season tickets are auto counted whether they turn up or not.
They do not count it as “tickets scanned on matchday”. I’m not sure how other teams count their attendance but it was interesting when I found this out.

  8. Really impressive figures considering cost of living crisis and the soaring cost of football. Good to see there’s such enthusiasm for footy outside the top flight

  9. Big respect to Bristol City’s growth here🙏

Amount of glory supporters we have😞

  10. *sobs* Our finest season in the PL back then with Laudrup in charge. Oh well..
We lost 2k fans immediately after relegation in 2018, this season it’s roughly 4 thousand. The Liberty only holds 21k so I suppose it’s not that bad a tail off.

Forest are getting about 29k every game now, basically at capacity every game. I do miss being able to easily get a ticket.

Worth noting that 12/13 was a season where we got automatically promoted under Bruce and none of the nonsense with The Allams had kicked off yet. To have a 25% increase over that is real testament to the new ownership’s engagement with the fan base and efforts to make the club accessible during a cost of living crisis. It looks even better if you fast forward 6 or 7 so years.

Also great to see that the increases are pretty generally across the board.

Tbf to us, the 12-13 season was when we got promoted to the PL so attendance would’ve been higher.

We’ve been in a relegation battle the last 2-3 seasons and only recently secured mid table obscurity this season so attendance is bound to have dropped.

In terms of % though it’s even worse. Bear in mind that in 12-13 the capacity was only 28k. So 23k out of 28k is a much higher % than 21k out the new capacity of 33.5k.

A few seasons near the playoffs and 50% more turn up. Amazing really. That and a crazy amount of European tourists.

    Pretty surprising.

I would have thought that streaming would have cut it a little since I would definitely rather stream some games than go to them – a Pulis style game on a Tuesday at 8pm for example.

Does anyone have a theory why attendance has increased so much?

Well the population of the UK has risen by over 3 million since the first season here, so not really sure what point you are trying to make.

Some of the teams have been up in the premiership since then as well. Teams at the top tend to attract bigger crowds, teams at the bottom less so, but if you look at teams in the middle like Birmingham they crowd has only grown by less than 4 thousand.

  17. The Leeds one is a bit skewed as there was mass disillusionment with the owners at the time. We were still paying Premier League prices for a team and stadium that was barely top half Championship worthy. I know that is the case for many clubs, just would not want people to think there’s suddenly been a rapid leap forward in the core fanbase.
