[Simon Stone] Am expecting Wayne Rooney to be confirmed as new @Argyle manager over the weekend. Great story initially by @JPercyTelegraph

When Foster got sacked, my uncle said something to the effect of “the club will already have a list of available Scousers and they’ll pick the next one down.” I thought he was making a joke but apparently he had inside information.

So anyway, now we know who’ll finish 24th, who do we think will finish in 23rd and 22nd?

Don’t think I ever got the chance to see Rooney at Fratton Park, if we play in the second half of the season I probably never will

Are any Plymouth fans able to shed any light on this whatsoever? I thought the ownership’s whole thing was about being really data-driven and smart, and surely Rooney’s data… could be better?

Foster obviously didn’t work out at all but I could see the logic behind it. Well-respected coach with England experience who was part of the Pompey backroom staff when we won league 2 so has EFL chops too. He was one of the final candidates for the Pompey job when it went to Mousinho (thankfully) too, so I guess must give a good interview. It’s hard to see Rooney as anything other than a big name appointment though, which seems like such a departure from what the club wants to be.

Guess I won’t be able to get Greggs sausage rolls in town as easily as I used to, then.

I am so so disappointed in the club right now, of all the available managers who are decent at what they do and they think the best we can do is the donkey Wayne Rooney? £100 on us to be relegated when betting is open for next season

Nice of us to give you all a 15 game head start! Why not play Championship football on extra hard mode anyway.

I feel so so bad for Plymouth fans, and when it inevitably goes wrong and he gets sacked, he’ll blame you for it too.

Rooney is on for his championship relegation hat trick

He’s done it with financial strife, then rank incompetence… What’s the third way he needs to take a club down for it to be a “genuine” hat trick?

  10. Wayne Rooyne’s overall managerial record is 40 wins from 154 games (26 percent), with 40 draws and 74 defeats.

This guy keeps getting jobs only because of his name, and nobody can deny this.

Part of me would love my club to do something wild like this to bring some excitement to what is often a drab and middling experience fucking about with PNE every year.

But then I think it’s better rubberneck a car accident than be cut out by the fire brigade.

  12. Well on the plus side it’s better to get this kind of wacky appointment out of the way early

That way you have enough time for your ‘Help us Obi-Wan” replacement to actually save you when Rooney is inevitably sacked

Plymouth really saw us have the worst start in Championship history and thought “yeah let’s try it”

  14. Are Plymouth looking to spend this summer? I ask because for us Rooney very quickly started throwing players under the bus and talking about getting his own in. Only player that looked better was Jordan James but I don’t know if that was Rooney coaching or just the fact he was playing more as he wasn’t much under Eustace. The rest of the squad looked shell shocked it was a mess.

Is he genuinely shit or has he just not had a decent chance at a club with less expectations?

I’m so sorry, Plymgob. This is brutally unfair. Talk about dooming a club before a ball is even kicked.

You’d think the club would have learnt after the Foster debacle.

And the funny thing is, this doesn’t even come close that debacle. Foster was a gamble on an inexperience manager that could have been a success, but turned out to have the tactical aptitude of a wet apple. But I could understand giving someone who hadn’t had a chance yet a go at it. And when it didn’t work out, I didn’t really agree with the ‘Dewsnip out’ comments because I thought the guys done well up until this point and one mistake doesn’t define a person.

Now, we are literally employing the man that single handedly destroyed the club that got relegated in our place. A man that has a proven record of failure as a manager.

    God help us.

If this somehow works out, then it’ll be the shock of the century. If it doesn’t, heads have to start rolling, and by heads I mean Dewsnip needs the sack. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, get out of our club.

Heard from someone at work that he’s going to put a few million of his own money into the club. Probably bullshit but might explain the clubs thought process.

  19. At Birmingham, Rooney had us playing disorganised chaos football. No pattern of play, no clear plan at what we were trying to do and the biggest frustration was how many times our shape was all over the place, we got done on counters so many times. We looked insipid and lacked confidence under Rooney. Meanwhile he was constantly blaming the players and going on about how he couldn’t wait to bring his own players in. He’s not an endearing character. Never bothered to build any rapport with fans, never acknowledged us even when we sung his name in support. We didn’t want him to begin with but we tried so hard to back him even when nothing was going right. We knew he was brought in for his marketability rather than his managerial ability. Plymouth have made a very naive appointment here, I just can’t see it working out. Enjoy hearing “you’re just a fat granny shagger” every week though.

This’ll either be a brilliant appointment or he’ll crash and burn and be sacked by Christmas. There’s no in-between. It’ll be awkward when he comes back to Pride Park though, very intrigued by what the fan response will be to him.
