Lothar Matthäus: “My player of [Euro 2024] so far is Marcel Sabitzer. His speed, his lightness, his finesse, the way he uses his teammates, the way he works in the back, the speed with which he plays forward – I’ve hardly seen him like this in Dortmund.”

  1. What a stupid comment. I wanted to agree and be proud of Sabi but that last sentence is so uncalled for and just flat out wrong. Ever since like early spring/late winter this year Sabi has been immense for us, so much that his performance in the Euros should not surprise anyone who watched us with open eyes. I guess tjats too much to ask for from German „experts“

  2. Sabitzer was the player of the season. He was played in a new role that doesn’t favor his skill set. Apart from a few games in a very messy site he constantly performed – week in and week out, offensively and defensively – well. Going into the game you already knew how he will perform. His base line is very high.

His work rate is higher than almost anyone I’ve seen in the last years. Offensively he matches bellinghams work rate, defensively he matches Ryerson.

I see him every match in the stadium, the work he does off ball is simply phenomenal. And again, he’s best in the Reus position, right behind a striker (watch home game against Atlético for his deep runs!) and yet he performed alone as a central midfielder – because he had to do all the work for Can – offensively and defensively.

Best transfer by far this year.
