  1. Interesting that they refer to Iling in the site post as a defender. Still expect he’ll be more likely to feature further up the field but wouldn’t shock me at all if we see at least a bit of him at LB/LWB this season.

Glad these are over the line, though. Real excited to see them both kick on and giving both Emery and their national team coaches some real selection headaches before long!

I maybe need to review iling as I thought he was an attacking player like saka. I am basing it on about 3 games I’ve seen him play and he was certainly not a defensive minded left back!

Also anyone who saw how our season fizzled out will know why we need more and better depth. You will get injuries, suspensions and loss of form…the more the merrier

  3. Welcome both, on we go.

As an aside, I was agonising on how low we sold Doug for but I quickly crunched some numbers and I do think it’s artificially low to give us more profit on the deal, given a rumoured sell on 20% sell on clause to City for Doug:

    £42m – DL Sale

    £9m each – EB + SIJ

With sell on clause and amortisation of the purchases that gives us ~£30m profit this year.

If the sale cost for Doug was +€20m so €70m, then EB + SIJ would have been €21m each, also closer to their market rates.

    £59m – DL sale

    £18m each – EB + SIJ

The profit would only be £27m.

TLDR – these lads are worth more than £9m each and Doug is worth more than £42m, but the deal was artificially lowered to give us more profit.

Please tear apart my numbers apart if I’m wrong

  4. Even if Barrenechea isn’t the best signing. I think compared to how badly Tim and Dendoncker stunk the joint out when they were on, he should be a much more serviceable backup for DM when Kamara isn’t available.

Will he be good enough to carry that position for the first half of the season though?

    Not sure.
