I got reminded yesterday how winning is the cure to any negative narratives.
England played well yesterday. The first time I can say that in the whole tournament and I thought the Watkins goal was brilliant in how he shot with conviction from a tight angle.
But it’s insane how perspectives change after 2 weeks. England was massively criticised because of their poor play in the group stage, despite finishing first. This is now being called pragmatic. Slovakia nearly got England out with a much inferior squad and this is now being called destiny with Jude’s goal.
It was universally accepted after the group stage that England had an easier knockout bracket than the other teams but now people on r/soccer find no difference between Georgia, Germany, France and Slovakia, Switzerland and Netherlands.
Southgate once had cups thrown at him but is now even being lauded as better than Deschamps by some people.
That made me of course think of Chelsea. If we win, every single bad narrative is gonna disappear. At least temporarily.
