England Fall Short Once Again | EURO 2024

[Music] hello and welcome to the rest is football oh it didn’t get the fairy tale ending did we um it didn’t happen they fell short lost to Spain SP with a much better team over the whole tournament and in the final um God long broadcast very long emotional can we talk about our tire I’ve come suited and booted yeah but you couldn’t you two look ridiculous got a t-shirt shocking you better than night our last pod give the people what they want suited and booted is that what they want is it oh it’s marvelous My Fit tonight was outstanding I must admit I love the um Tom Sweeney olive green olive green yeah nice highlight the night actually you just couldn’t be asked to change into your T-shirt we’re all a bit we’re all a bit down weren’t we I mean come on of course we were down I mean if you look at the tournament throughout I think it was more in our hearts wasn’t it I think say that now there’s a lot of Hearts behind you we’ve got how do we’ve got a full house here yes we’ve got a lot of England fans a lot of disappointing England fans in here friends of um producer John mostly um one or two other people as well has friends in George George’s turned up my son but yeah we’re all a bit down yeah of course we’re down I think if you look at Spain throughout the tournament and Al’s mentioned it a lot haven’t you in terms of they look like the best team in terms of the rotations their aggressive Forward Thinking football no but their ideas in what they wanted to do they played 433 with two Wingers who knew exactly what they need to do Williams and yamal who were outstanding I think in terms of young players coming into the tournament with a big reputation was thinking could they deliver and they really did deliver I thought up front was outstanding not in terms of his his goals but his work rate for the team running him behind that we missed with Kane on on the other side rodri in Midfield I banged on about rodri all season in terms of defensive midfielder there’s no one even close to him agree his partner Fabian Ruiz alongside him a little bit more technical just Fabian just Fabian no Fabi Ru no they call him Fabian in Spain they were going what’s this Fabian Ru thing okay well that’s H sh [ __ ] Fabian it’s easier yeah exact s Jordy you’re obviously struggling to get Ru in Fabian you roll the tongue like that Fabian look that’s an L it’s like FG one more time do one more time go on Ru no that wasn’t it was it this is the most fun I’ve about tonight Fabian oh right our thoughts I mean we we spoke after the game we didn’t deserve to get anything we didn’t play well we were flat um deep there hasn’t been one full 90 minutes where we can go yeah we played really well semi-final for semi-final for half a game yes first game for 30 minutes and other than that we’ve just produced really spectacular moments at the right time without really playing well mhm now strength have been that and also finding a way and sticking together and all of those things um but in reality we didn’t deserve anything we got the the best team won by a mile they won seven out of seven they didn’t change the system hardly even when players went out it’s players that came in knew what they were doing um they press really well they’ve got two outstanding talent in in terms of yamal and Williams either side they’ve got they’ve got two amazing midfielders yeah and one of them went off uh uh they didn’t miss him I must admit when he when rodri went off at half time I thought blind we’ve had some luck in this tournament now it’s happening again yeah and and then they go and bang one in within what 90 seconds or two minutes well we just didn’t we were flat again even when we had the ball we just kept on giving it away our passing what’s the biggest problem then Al what what is what is what is the problem we’ve talked about players the problem is is that got the players the only time the only time we tried to really attack was when we went one n down correct I mean but are we expecting too much from Southgate because he’s a defensive manager He’s Got Talent in his Squad in offensive positions now where we’re expecting because of the season they had for their clubs but they all follow a system which works for them and it’s different to it’s different International Football so have we been a little bit naive expecting great things from England because England today we haven’t been Na and think and expecting England to do better than they have done in terms of performance- wise I think we’ve got to be fair Gareth Southgate has come in and transformed the way the english team is perceived by the public the media and I think he was the right man at the right time but I think this emergence of of young exciting Forward Thinking footballers that are all playing High pressing football for their clubs and I think that’s probably not suited him and he’s not suited them and they looked a little bit lost and they were disjointed in and we were quite critical early on in the tournament and we got you know bit of blowback I don’t think we did from inside the camp I think we got we were basically used a little bit by the media to try and drive a wedge between us at the BBC and the team and I think it was was a bit naughty we didn’t see anything that the players or the manager didn’t see they they acknowledged that they didn’t hadn’t played well when we walked off the pitch today we we we bumped into quite a few of the English players and and they were all absolutely understanding and they were disappointed despondent I won’t name any names because it’s not it’s not fair but you know they were you know you could tell they weren’t happy with perhaps the way things went I think the only time we’ve seen England in this tournament play really attacking aggressive football attacking football is when they’ve been behind with the exception of perhaps a couple of first halves in in games Netherlands that perhaps stood out but mostly they were sitting back and cautious and even when it went to 1-1 and you thought blind me we we were really going at them Palmer scores that wonderful goal brilliant bit of football wasn’t it and then you think right press on but no they started sitting again but what is that is that the manager is that a tactical thing well let’s put it this way I think it was just before the goal scor was around 84 minutes 85 minutes on the sideline coming on with Connor Gallagher and Kieran trippier and that to me says it all if you know if you two one up with four minutes to go maybe but what’s he thinking there is he thinking he’s Shing it up to because he’s a bit worried about that well I think he probably thinks at that time the game’s G to extra time so he’s thinking Luke shaww Luke Shaw I can understand trippier that was obvious trippier one that’s the pretty obvious one because he hasn’t played a lot of football so I yeah sort of understood that one um gallager but the Gallagher one yeah um I mean who I’m not sure who he was going to actually come on for anyway well it would have been either foden or Bellingham he’s not going to been Bellingham off probably yeah but Bellingham wasn’t happy either Bellingham was stuck on the left again he wasn’t happy no he wasn’t you could tell he wasn’t happy at all he had a disappointment look about him he was his arms were up he was looking towards the bench for for guidance and I think he was to see if things weren’t going as well and he wasn’t happy with lack of press and everything else he was showing all of those emotions I could see it I was I was looking at him all the time he was sh frustrations of a of a great player that’s had an incredibly successful season going why is this happening he’s not a left midfielder no he’s not and so I sort of understood his frustrations why do you think it was odd he he drifted away from you know that the box box that been successful and suddenly went oh I’m too worried about the left hand side so I want Bellingham to track back I was really surprised that he went back to the four because our best 45 minutes of football of the whole of the tournament was against the Netherlands in the first half with playing three at the back two Wing backs correct allbe it trippier was on one side and didn’t didn’t get the ball into the boxes perhaps but that through that I don’t I would never ever blame him for that so when he uh when he brought Shaw back in which we all thought that he would do just because what we’ve been seeing all tournament is a lack of balance down the left hand side so when when the opportunity arose that he’s played 45 and he’s obviously fit to start a game I thought yeah he’ll put him back in but I thought he would have went he would have just gone like for like for that system again you know I was shocked he didn’t do it I mean I just couldn’t I couldn’t get my head round it it just seemed he went back to a system that just did not work because because it’s clear that Bellingham and for and don’t want to play left on that in that in the and this time he shifted Bellum on there and and then they ended up being basically playing our final third to be honest so I think whatever formation we’ have played against Spain they would have battered us really I’m being totally honest I think they just they can adapt to any situation the way they keep the ball in the first first half they had 70% possession what what are you supposed to do with that they keep the ball well I’m not surprised they had it because to stop spearing you’re going to need energy and you’re going to need press yourself we still we still have players on the pitch who can keep the ball though but what think we just stood off them and watched them and I admired them and think I was like thinking all right there might they’re a very good team with some very good players who all know the system but to to to beat that team you’re going to have to get wired in a little bit and get closer to them rather than just let them pass it around at their pace and let them control again I thought they just tactically were much better that’s that that that’s what I felt all through the game and you have to say what you think if you go individual right around the team you go how many players would you put in realistically in their normal form and the way they play for clubs and he’s I think we basically had players that play in a certain way for their football clubs and they’re then been asked to play in a completely different way or it seems to me if they’re not then they’re underperformed and they’ve not been able to stand up to the occasion um yeah but I think I think the players have to take some responsibility for that too of course but take for example kukara he’s had a really tough time at Chelsea and he’s come here and people are going oh kukara this you know some people are doubting him but he was it was like a machine in this team it it was good up bright see exactly that’s my point if you’re comfortable in a certain system and playing a certain way and then you ask to play in a different way like perhaps he’s been at Chelsea because the club’s a bit of a mess then suddenly you’re uncomfortable you don’t feel like this is I don’t understand what my job is and then I think England suddenly found a little way of playing with the boxing Midfield and it was better much better and then to go back to a system that didn’t work was odd really odd and it may not have made any difference anyway but it might have done we’ll never know in our in our in our starting lineup today we had apparently we’ve been told we had the best player in England the best player in Spain they’re facts AR they okay then add Jon stones to that then add I would say Jon Stones had a really good tournament what I’m seeing is with the talent when you when you say we’ve got the best player in Germany Spain and England add JN Stones add Bea Saka add the goalkeeper who’s had a good tournament again two great serves in the final one Gay’s been the best though out of all the players in the tournament has been the most consistent we missed him for a game K are come we’ve just been we’ve been a moment’s team we hav’t we haven’t been a good team we’ve been a moment’s team who who found that right moment at the particular time and the togetherness and all of that but we didn’t we haven’t we haven’t played well for long enough should we talk about the broadcast I think we should you guys have done a lot of tournaments now how do times have had to yeah how do you g your mood though how do you get the balance right you know what the mood is after that game you know okay so how do you you got we got 45 minutes it’s the worst part of broadcasting not you ever do our editor Rich got us what 45 minutes minutes he’s over there he’s over there 45 minutes 45 minutes we had but when England lose it’s the most difficult piece of Television because you know everyone at home is down we’re down but also we’ve got to lift it and try and you know be fair and give and and it was lovely to have Juan Mata there because it it gave us someone to go to to kind of lift the spirits a little bit what a lovely guy and he was you know he that’s his first show is ever go he was good was he he was amazing he’s good likable knowledgeable knows a game well when he won a World Cup in the AOS come on well I know he’s proper player proper bloke um really good really enjoyed his company um so that helped but it’s it’s hard is it you know at the end of final whistle goes and you’re thinking you know you got all sorts of things ready if if England win and it’s like did you have a closing line do you want to do your closing line he going do hell no it’ll have to wait for two years how long did take right in that closing line or did you get a bit of help from our editor Rich yeah we we scripted together Rich we did double team what was uh what what did I missing there I didn’t I wasn’t listening to you’ll never hear it it will never it surf I tell you what he does that Jo at least three times a day every time D Jes at least he’s cheered the mood of in the room we’re all a bit down we’re all bit down down and it’s a little bit like that when you do the last 45 minutes because you know a most people you know if you lose this kind of stop watching because everyone’s kind of my my my P who with me in the room wow in your room now in my room yeah my M me outet I don’t know whether he’s here or not but he’s uh I can hear this like noise going on anyway he’s got up and go to the L he’s gone to the L and uh did he wake you up S I’ve sort of shout I’ve s of shouted over said you all right he goes have you heard about Trump oh yeah I went no what’s happened he goes he’s been shot on the ear I said what he said he’s been shot on the ear I said what he said he’s being shot in the ear went oh [ __ ] off 4 this morning oh dear we have to discuss hurricane well that was part of the future in my mind was what what England do what what does Harry Kane do you know he was not himself in this tournament um for what reason do you he still scored three goals I don’t know he’s in these 30s now Michael when I got to 30 31 my leg started to go um I retired from International Football at 32 because I knew at 31 that was happening um and it’s horrible it’s horrible and and it might not be the case but but he looked a bit leggy in this tournament yeah he definitely wasn’t as sharp as he as he could have should have been there’s no doubt about yeah but normally his brain is a step of well still is you know he’s also a unbelievably good finisher and that that you don’t lose you know you give me a ball now and I could still miss um but he’s still a good finisher and he’s what he’s won part of a golden boot with six plays um with three goals um but you know his contribution was he got one touch in the Box in the last two major finals yeah um it’s not all his fault because the team played very deep and that’s you know that’s the kind of way England have played but he’s he’s been great he’s the all-time leading goal scorer for England um he would have beaten Alan shir’s record quite comfortably if he’ have stayed in the Premier League he might come back might come back um it’s it’s a decision that either he will make or the new how many goals have you got [ __ ] loads loads how many 260 and Counting M I bet Pete [Laughter] knows H a serious point I mean he’s been labored in this tournament he’s he’s struggled a little bit he’s he’s he’s not managed to get behind Defenders at all now I know he’s never really been his game to run behind but you you’ve seen it to a degree in his career um and I know at Tottenham he had son even Deli Alli when he was at his best running Beyond him and even at Bayern Munich now people say well K he scored a million goals there this season but you know he’d have muar on one side and um San on the other side and Coleman and and yeah you know those kind of legs that can Sprint behind which you’ve got to have with him because he does like to drop into Midfield but well you you have to play him there there was there was not one moment during this competition that I ever thought he should have been left out yeah but what I would see is is that and this is not in hindsight because I’ve I said it before and during the tournament that if you’re going to play him you have to have legs now we’ve got legs on the right hand side in in sacka you’re going to mention Anthony Gordon quite absolutely yeah and I mean Anthony Gordon got six minutes maybe something I saw Anthony Gordon after the game I said to him briefly I said you I feel for in this tournament I think you should have got more minutes and he was very kind he went yeah and I went but don’t worry you you will get more chances it will happen for you he’s very young there’s no way you can ever drop your captain on your record goal scorer and a guy who’s on three goals without playing particularly well it’s difficult so um it’s it’s impossible it’s not I mean you just you couldn’t do it and I wouldn’t have done it I would have kept him in the team but I would have had more legs in and around him to run to run past him because you just said it he’s a great goal scorer and always will be a great he’s been a great player and he’s a great look at the season he had man you can’t it’s like but he didn’t he didn’t look right whether he’s carrying injury I will compare it a little bit to my final tournament and I told you before that I felt during that last season which is one of the reasons I made the decision to retire from International Football and finish English football to move to Japan um because I could feel my legs going and I was pouring that last you know and I was made a bit of a kind of mar because Grant Taylor brought me off but he had he had every right to bring me off because I was I was P my best and it happens to some people at some point now maybe he was just tired or carrying a little something that affected him and um that might not be the case but I wonder is what is he 30 coming up to 31 now yeah and that’s EXA L the time when I started to feel that way and I I was perhaps a player that relied more on his Pace than Harry so it was more had a bigger effect on me and he’s you know he’s still going to be able to score loads of goals cuz he’s but in his defense though him you got saaka coming off the right onto his left foot then Bellingham was on the left today as a striker he never knows when the ball’s going to come in but he was the box but is that because is that because of the positions of the rest of the team when we talked about him baying he can go a little bit deeper but you know your Wingers are going to stay nice and high and wide and they’re going to look to cross the ball into whether it’s a cutback whether it’s in the Box whether it’s a tapping whatever it may be sometimes I find with England they take too long to get Saka wants to come on his left foot brilliant and he wants the first thing he’s thinking about is shooting the main problem is the team is too deep right that is the main problem therefore it’s a more of a problem for Harry Kane so I feel for him if the team plays high and everybody presses high but he has to press as well which he he’s not done but that for me is probably coming from the management so the team did not play high the only time they play high is when they’re losing and they have to chase it it happened again today we go one nil down after halftime and then suddenly you go oh actually we’re quite good and we played forward and England were attacking and they created a couple of chances before Cole Palmer’s bit of Brilliance Watkins Watkins came on again for the first time someone run in behind and then all of a sudden what then happens is the Defenders get 10 or 15 yards further up the pitch midfielders get 10 or 15 yards and then all of a sudden you’re forcing spin to kick it long and then you get the ball back what happened Alan when we went 1-1 we sat back sat back again yeah and I don’t know where that’s coming that can’t be necessarily coming from an but but I think what happens is they’ve got a tactical shape but I think when they go behind it’s like my God we’ve just got to go for in take risks rather than be cautious yeah but I would put I would have put a little bit down to Cole Palmer went to press didn’t he and he it was too late and the Gap in the middle of the pitch I mean we could talk about England being defensive which they were but that’s because Mike you go you all go or you don’t go of course I I agree with that but I mean what was it 86 minutes just hang on to what you’ve got get it to extra time and then you go again there’s a big massive Gap in the middle of the pitch against a team what do I say about Spain if you give them a chance they will hurt you they’re good aabal comes on do you know when you when you have a look at who who’ve played Croatia Italy Germany France France and England I know they’ve beaten four World Cup winners all the all the big teams who you thought they might have a chance they’re the favorites they’re the second favorites Germany on on home soil they’ve beaten everyone so the by by an absolute mile of being the best team y agreed well played Spain AB no no we have to give them credit don’t we loads of credit they were brilliant in this tournament who stood out for you and I think I mean come on yal yal he was 17 yesterday it’s not normal do you know what it is though and also the way the way the the way they play cuz they’ve scored 15 goals which is a record record yeah so they’ve defended really well they’ve attacked really well they’ve press really well um and everyone knows the roles everyone looked even when one went out suspended caral yeah missed the semi-final yeah pedri gets inj bring inmo livig yeah exactly full of energy 23 successive finals for club or country without being beaten winning them all I mean that’s nuts in it the 23 consecutive wins in finals we got to give Spanish teams or international team delente Luis delente De loads of credit we talked about him had success at um was it 19s and 21s I believe yes it was 19s and 21s and to go to to to men’s football and play the way when he got his job a lot of people Spain going oh this different game it’s like now you’ve got to manage men you’ve managed boys you managed youth team players but he’s obviously taking a lot of them in he’s stuck with the same trusted them played bravely do you know what this is do you know what this is though seriously this is a Triumph for attacking football over negative defensive football and that is a good thing and I’m getting lots of M yes I agree over there no but it’s it’s easy it’s easy to say that is it I agree with you we all want to see attacking football but I think that’s the way the game’s gone now there’s still we’ve seen caution in this tournament but the team that’s played Without caution yeah but France have won what they’ve won previously previously though caution Real Madrid won the Champions League they got absolutely battered by Man City and the you know man city lost to they were lucky but they still won didn’t they but that can still happen but overall overall but what what I’m trying to say there’s there’s still two ways of winning you can be I won’t say Real Madrid’s football is negative but they just find a way to win moment it’s not they don’t play they don’t just sit really deep I mean they don’t France stunk the place out by the way in terms of how bad they were correct no I just think it’s I just think genuinely it’s it’s what we want as as football fans as people that have been involved in the sport forever is you want the sport to be entertaining and popular and to keep that I think it’s important that the team’s playing that way do win out we’ve seen it in the the Premier League now I think the front foot teams you know City yeah Liverpool if England win this had a won tonight no one would have given the [ __ ] about en and front foot no that’s no that’s very true that’s very true but I’m trying to make I’m trying to make a point on behalf of Spain and the fact is they completely played England playing that way if england are to compete and win a major tournament they’ve got to get on the front foot and play the game that the players completely outplayed everyone yeah France Italy Croatia Germany England it’s getting better though at least we’ve got to what two finals two finals um the semi-final I think St George’s park has been been massive in terms of if you look at the footballers they’re producing now technical footballers Cole Palmer foden sacka even Gordon has done really well um but the big question mark for me would be are we producing English managers and you talk about we want to go forward with with Southgate who would be next in line and that is the question do firstly we should say do you think Gareth of call a day I I can’t imagine that he would carry on now I think it’d be very hard it must have been I think I think I think without before we say anything we will need to look at the big picture he took over an absolute [ __ ] show correct when we were done off Iceland didn’t he yeah so he’s taking us from Rock Bottom to where we are now where we now expect to be in finals and semifinals so we should though with the players we have hear me out we’ve got some really good players who all play different roles at their football clubs but he’s got a better Squad now than he’s ever had he’s got a better Squad than he had three years ago when he took us to the final of the Euros so the expectations gone from zero from there now to there and he hasn’t been able to deliver that England getting over the line so I think my guess is that he’ll say thank you very much I’ve taken this team as far as I can I’m going to hand it over to someone else now and he deserves great respect correct he deserves a if if he goes he goes on his terms and you just say Thanks for the Memories thanks for the great memories um and good luck in the future whatever you do and you’ve done a really really good job yeah what he’s done what he’s unquestionably done is is brought the team closer to the public again after a period of time when there was no love for the national team when he took over and I think he’s built a togetherness and he’s brought Harmony to the players and a togetherness that I think we’ve not had for quite some time and his record is really really good without actually quite winning something um I think that I think that mentally I think it’s tough being England manager it’s always been called The Impossible job hasn’t it it’s only not the impossible job if you win a tournament and he’s he’s been close yeah but how do you measure success well like I think impr I think I think as yes there’s been Improvement but surely we’re all EX footballers we need to win exactly you need to you need to win so for all the the great things he’s done up till now he deserves respect yeah but with the team we had in this tournament like look at look at the Spain team it’s full of youngsters it’s a whole new way of playing they’ve come to the tournament and they believe they could win it today when I was watching England it was almost like there was just waiting for an individual to pullers out of the [ __ ] well we were a moments team that’s what I just said we didn’t we weren’t we weren’t we that’s the whole point we shouldn’t be a moments team with the squad we have I agree yeah as Englishmen we have this mentality is oh because if we get to a final we’ve done brilliant yes it’s it’s great but what do we need to do to get over the line that is the difference do you think do you think it needs someone else now I I one I asked one when he took over we were an underdog team and now given the players that they’ve got they’re not does it need a different person to take them on from here I think we need an attacking manager who is willing to take risks and even if we get to a quarterfinal or a semi-final the World Cup coming up next and we lose but we have an identity that we can all get behind going forward at this moment with England we’re just hanging our hearts on individual Brilliance to get us through and there’s no way there’s no way yes rodri and Fabian in Midfield world class players at the back I I would take probably seven or eight players from the England side against Spain today and we’re and we’re talking now like we’ve done well to get to the final yes he has done well but football’s about winning yeah and that is that is the key we need to get out of this mentality of of just getting to a final is good enough we need to move forward from that until we get out of that mindset we will never win anything well we got um if you’re going to win a tournament you need to have a little bit of look here and there but I don’t think Spain no but Spain Spain didn’t really have any luck really they were just out right the best team you know but we did have a little bit of luck to get there ourselves we did have magic moments um but we just yeah we we just weren’t good enough disappointing you talk about it’s about winning but against the top teams and his record against the top 10 teams is that they’ve won seven of the last 29 games against the strong sides now I think we want to be respectful for gath I think he’s done wonders for for England for the football and you know brought us together but now I think we’re talking about who takes us on and I I’m fairly convinced that Gareth will but no no one’s questioning what is brought yeah in terms of chemistry and harmy we’re talking about tactically the game has moved on that’s my point so I think he’s been the right person to bring the nation together in terms of the football team and now maybe it’s time for someone else with a more modern attacking style of football because I think the game’s gone away from being successful if you really defend if we didn’t have the the players we have in offensive positions i’ would say the right person for the job because defensively that’s what’s been very good for England in the past who next do you go English there’s only really Eddie how well stop it say Gareth does call it a day which I I suspect you with because it must be so tough must be so demanding so hard who would you go for we um Eddie how well there’s no doubt he’ll be uh he’ll be in the beton because he done a great job in Newcastle if go English we mentioned Frank Lampard but wouldn’t you go all out Jurgen klopp I’d go one bigger pep but you there’s a lot of yeps in the back I think we’d all of Pep but do you realistically think why why not I don’t know CU Klo out of a job he’ll have a bit of a rest you really think for a German manager yeah but he’s not really German he’s half German he because he’s been in England for so long oh really okay all right why why go to a Spanish manag do you think do it me I don’t want pep to leave city but I’m saying if he ever did I would love to have him the thing is Club managers have paid an awful lot of money you know awful lot of money I can’t see the fa stomping up that kind of cash you a club manager Newcastle 10 minutes well only I was Pete don’t laugh Pete Wes have gone up since I was a manager what was you getting at Newcastle G not enough Spill the Beans 2009 that was what and what was you getting then not enough so what do you think I mean it’s slightly unfair because obviously gar well you just described how Spain have gone from yeah where they left to how they’ve gone to they they got they had a guy who’s gone through the system well let did and Gareth did that and it was all you said it was a bit underwhelming and yet he’s gone on to manage these group of players and then win the Euros so I didn’t say it was underwhelming a lot of that Spanish fans said it was underwhelming at the time I’m I’m for England and England English managers Potter you’d like you don’t want Eddie how to leave Newcastle well I don’t want Eddie how but there a lot going onast outstanding candidate there’s a lot going on in Newcastle like Eddie who Eddie the guys who appointed Eddie who have now left y um and he’s he’s a front foot manager he’s young he got you know he’s got real energies to his football no he has he would he would without doubt be an outstanding candidate um but we wouldn’t want to lose him at Newcastle that’s a problem IAL talked about producing English managers don’t think English managers won the Premier League have they it’s that’s why aren’t we producing English coaches it’s and that is the thing you there was a period where there were a lot of Scottish coaches and that’s kind of faded away a little bit but it’s it’s it’s nuts I don’t think the fans matter whoever I think what it is I think because we have you know we were traditionally a a country that played a different kind of football to everyone else it was up and atom direct longball and all that stuff and most of our successful relatively successful coaches played that kind of style whereas we’ve started produce players that have got you know much more technical much more tactical much more um like really comfortable on the ball and that’s evolved I think what will evolve next is the managers that can coach that but the people like Eddie how maybe gr Potter are are are those um I guess I guess we’ll see but first it’s up to you know Gare Southgate he he he deserves to to call it how he wants it I agree I think he’s certainly earn that respect and what he’s done in the job where he’s taken us um and if he were to leave which I think he will yeah I think the same um then we say thank you very much shake his hand yeah see well done thank you because you’ve done a really really good job now it’s on to someone else totally Echo those sentiments what opportunity is for the next manager I think I think unbelievable opportunity because the talent the pool of talent that England now have in terms of players um is a great job for someone coming in to go and Chase that World Cup in two years time Bring it on it’s coming home well can we just say it’s been a great tournament I know it didn’t end the way we wanted but I’ve had a blast all the people at the BBC from Rich over there Rich the editor has been absolutely fantastic really producer colum the producer the runners the analysis guys YT why Tim around the corner back there I think somewhere Biggers big all the guys who looked after me on Co coms yeah you’re analis team at the BC got a really good analysis team and to thank you guys as well like the rest is football Harry John Vasco are here today yeah guys coming to see Georgie Boy Georgie Boy you brought CR you brought the Vibes pleasure and whatever you do guys do not [ __ ] contact me cuz I’m on holiday I think we need a break that’s it turn from the rest his football thank you so much genuinely thank you so much um we’ve basically done a PO a day during the whole tournament we’ve had a laugh aren’t we it’s been good it’s been fun Goodbye For Me Goodbye For Me Goodbye for me have a good summer and see you in August sometime yeah exactly [Applause] [Music]

  1. Thank you all for spending some of this year's tournament here with us on the channel, it's been top 🙏🏽⚽ Much more content coming from the guys before the year is out.

    Take care.

  2. I think we did about as well as possible playing the way we did.

If you’re playing a team who are really good at keeping hold of the ball and you keep gifting it back to them by hoofing it up the pitch, you’re going to be seriously up against it.

England didn’t look like a fluid, free-flowing team too often in the tournament and got by with one or two moments where it clicked against teams who themselves weren’t great.

In the game last night, Spain looked rattled for a couple of minutes after we scored but then calmed the game back down, kept the ball and got going again. I just wished we were more like that.

Thanks for the pod though, fellas! It’s been a great journey. Safe journey home!

  3. Only a really decent, nice guy like Southgate could make the daft & flawed error of electing to remain on in the coach’s role after yet another tournament of clueless management!

The apathetic & comfortable setup between Mr Nice Guy Southgate & the FA will prevail thus assigning this new young talented skilled squad to ongoing abject performance & ongoing failure.

This team under a technical, tactically aware & skilled coach would have won the 2020 Euros final at Wembley & played a skilful, respectable & attacking final in Berlin at the 2024 Euros!

    Southgate OUT!

  4. Kane fulfils the same role for England as Ronaldo does for Portugal and Mbappé does for France. Namely, to keep more effective, in-form players out of the team.

  5. Let’s be honest…they’ve been imbalanced and poor all tournament. Only individual moments of quality got us to the final.

Trying to accommodate both Foden and Bellingham cost us. Both wanted a free role in the middle and the left was exposed.
Foden should’ve stayed on the bench, Gordon should’ve started on the left.

  6. From my German perspective I think Southgate‘s tenure – although a lot longer – is comparable to that of Jürgen Klinsmann as German manager from 04-06. We hit rock bottom at the 04 euros and he gave the public a connection to the team back, so the country could feel something resembling pride for our team.

It took Joachim Löw though – the superior tactician – to actually make us champions. I hope England can find the right manager because as a footballing country they just deserve some trophy at this point, especially considering the talent at their disposal.

  7. The ‘best’ player in Germany and Spain is not Bellingham or Kane at all. This is the English problem overrating players. Talking about thats ‘facts’ stop it

  8. Spaih deserved it levels above England – cant beat slovakia, slovenia, denmark, netherlands? Switzerland in 90 minutes and people praising southgate for making last minute subs that should have been made games prior / should have started. Only casuals think Southgate has done a good job, hes underperformed with that squad in terms of how we have played and opposition played

  9. You guys seriously think England had a chance this am? Not with this manager …how could he lose 2 final consecutively ? I dont even want to furhter elaborate the obvious. Please please Mr Southgate please resign .

  10. Micah is bang on, they are just a better team than us – the players have to take responsibility we not have been set up perfectly but at the end of the day key players like Foden in the grand scheme of things just didnt turn up, Kane didnt turn up, Rice was sloppy etc the manager cant be at fault for how poor they guys were

  11. Obviously having Pep or Klopp as England manager would be amazing. But hear me out……what about Arsene Wenger? I think he could roll back the years and get England playing really good attacking football

  12. The problem is that all the English fans, media and pundits are delusional. England do not have a world class team. Their players play alongside world class talent with their clubs but as an international team they are not that good.

  13. Gareth has had his time but please pass the torch. Context is needed for his "Success" in Tournament games, 26 games managed, beat Top/Relatively top sides three times (Germany, Croatia and Netherland). Has a talent pool of very good players who all understand the game well. Tactically they just don't seem to have a way of playing, managers in the prem and other leagues get dug out if they don't have a way of playing. From this tournament we just looked so poor all the way through where Gareth was trying to fit square pegs in round holes.

We were very unlikely to beat Spain but the other games we looked so poor, just need to have a system and work the players around that. If some big names don't start, they don't start.

  14. Harry Kane is SELFISH for playing through injury. FFS we were essentially playing with 10 men all tournament. He also kept a player in Ollie Watkins who can run in behind and who had 32 goal contributions in the EPL on the bench. I also don't give a damn about Kane's 40+ goals with Bayern, considering the amount of quality service he has on his team and he is also playing in a weaker league than the premier league. He is the most overrated player of all time and has no silverware to show for it. Oftentimes, teams he has played for look better when he isn't playing. Ie. Spurs 2019 UCL campaign. If Southgate and Kane are out, England will be Champions in 2026.

Also the fact that Jude Bellingham spent the majority of the match on the left handside does my absolute head in. Anthony Gordon was rotting on the bench all TOURNAMENT. Why was Southgate so reluctant to play Gordon. WHY did Phil Foden play a full 90 minutes when he was offering NOTHING ALL TOURNAMENT. How did Cole Palmer not get a single start in this tournament. Serious questions need to be asked and for the obvious favoritsm shown to certain players and the absolute waste of brilliant talents like Palmer, Gordon and Watkins who spent the majority of this tournament sitting on the sidelines when we were playing CRAP football.

  15. Kane needs to be omitted from the next tournament. If Southgate does not get a new contract, any decent manager coming in would drop Kane and build a squad with all the amazing talented young players we have. Southgate likes his mix of experience and youth, but the experienced players are now past it, whilst many of the young players are now very experienced themselves at international level, they don't need the older players holding them back. We need to thank the old boys for what they have done over the years, and move on.

  16. 3 attempts on target, the goal and the 2 headers cleared off the line in the one attack, 2 corners, none against the Dutch…with that squad!!!

  17. I thank Southgate for everything he’s done, truly, but it’s absolutely time for England to move on from him.

It’s beyond clear he doesn’t have the ability to manage a team to win a tournament, constantly relying on negative, defensive tactics and hoping for individual moments to get you through.

England now need a manager who will establish a specific style of play and has the tactical nous to get the best out of what is realistically one of, if not the best squads in world football right now.

  18. Do you not think that Kyle Walker was out of position for both goals? . He was playing as a centre back trying to cover their strikers . He was asked also to cover their winger as well

  19. Maybe, just maybe the players are not as good as everyone thinks. The media calls everyone "great" and in reality there's not one player in the English squad that is a great player. there's one very very good player (Bellingham) who could become great and some good players, Foden, Palmer, Walker and the rest are just OK. Manager is just incompetent. That's the reality

  20. As I've said before. Pay Pep whatever it takes for him to take over or speak with Jürgen Klopp. He's had a break away from the Daily grind. The national team should give him more of a Work, life balance than before as well which is why he left Liverpool. 🤔🤔

  21. Walker at fault for both goals and did nothing going forward – Trent must be chuckling away and the ineptitude of the 'manager' (he's not a manager and never will be.)

Kane spent the entire tournament walking about – playing with 10 men throughout it all. Just about all of our goals came after subs came on.

Pickford seems to think every game is a 'how far can you kick the ball' competition. He actually kicked one out for a goal kick the other end. No teams play like that – except Gareth's England.

And why keep dropping back into our own half every time we fluke our way back into a game? Answer: Southgate being utterly useless.

Time for a few of them to quit international football – but Southgate must go now.

  22. Alf Ramsey dropped Jimmy Grieves and England went on to win their only major tournament.

There was a time when even when Kane was not scoring he was still a play making asset to the team, those days have long gone.

In the last two seasons at Spurs he was no longer that player, he scored, but the team often lost in a large part because Spurs were often playing with ten men.

It was so glaringly obvious that England were playing with ten men, and Kane was setting the tone for the team, pressing with him on the field was simply amateur hour.

Need any proof? Look at the fifty minutes against Spain before Kane was substituted, and the fifteen minutes after. Southgate doesn't get any credit for coming up with what should have been the starting line-up in the fifty/eighty minute marks.

Kane has a good shot, has a killer pass and can take a penalty, but he is slow, has no one-on-one ball skills, is not a captain and is too eager to play for a foul, which when it isn't given he wants to stay on the floor trying to make the point.

Kane, along with Rashford and Jack Grealish shouldn't have been in the squad let alone in the starting eleven.

Kane wasn't the only problem but he was the main one and this tournament has done nothing for his legacy.

  23. Gareth became manager after the Iceland debacle and he’s managed conservatively to ensure that never happens again. When England equalised there was a moment when they stopped attacking, passed back to Pickford who then bombed it forward for a Spain goal kick! That was it… no more attacks! Hopeless

  24. Heed the words of Juan Mata about replacing Southgate – "Be careful what you wish for". Gareth has surely earnt the right to decide his own future. I'd say it's more likely than not, that his replacement will not be as successful.
