It would be absolutely disastrous if all three walk out for free next summer, we’d be set back years if it was to happen.

You’re not just losing high quality, experienced players but it also pushes other transfer plans further back since we have to look at replacing them first

Could be looking at needing a RB, CB, DM, RW alongside planning for a new LB since Robbo only has two years left in his contract as well as the question marks that stand over the likes of Diaz and Darwin on top of that

We’d need to go on a proper spending spree for once if it was to happen

  2. Wrong_Lever_1 on

Fully expect the club to let him leave on a free and spend 5 years trying to buy one player every year to replace him, only to say that Harvey Elliott was the replacement all along

  3. _FreePalestine__ on

He’s too good to go to Saudi or MLS right now. He’s got atleast another 2 years at this level.

  4. For this little time in charge, this new management of Hughes and Edwards is losing their support among fans.

    1. No summer signings
    2. Signing goalkeeper when we have the best one in tje world
    3. Wasting time in offering contracts to Virgil, TAA and Mo

    Where are you Jurgen?

  5. Best g/a player in PL history, no sign of decline, still breaking records … simply irreplaceable. But f he walks out for nothing in a year, it’s the biggest transfer fuck up of all time … he stays or goes for big cash, simple as that.

  6. StonedCharmander on

This is a huge mistake. Either sign a new deal and leave by the end of the season or leave now. Liverpool are basically giving away £60~100m.

  7. wanderluster88 on

If a team like Real Madrid can afford to give contract extension to 38-year old Modric there is absolutely no reason we should hesitate with Salah. He is still our most important attacker.

  8. We can’t let him go, even if you think he’s declined he still out scores and out assists everyone in the entire team by a mile.

There is no one in world football that we have a chance of getting that can replace his output, you have got to tie him down to a contract for as long as he wants and worst case if he has a massive decline in that time Saudi will come in for him.

  9. tacosmuggler99 on

Hughes has been in charge for months now so this is just unacceptable. We know what kind of person and player he is, either start negotiations or sell him in the beginning of the summer.

  10. Look he’s getting old and he’s going to be expensive. But he takes such good care of his body. There’s no reason not to get 2 more years out of him. Sign a 2 year extension, sell him to saudi next year for an insane fee, there are options here. Worst case would be we end up letting him go for free.

  11. He just scored and assisted in our first game of the season at 32 years old. Not getting a 2 year contract extension would be very silly especially since we haven’t made contact for his replacement.

  12. Just give him a 2 year extension for fucks sake how hard is it, fork up the money you cheap shits

  13. HiroProtagonist1 on

I genuinely fear for us if we don’t sign at least 2 of the 3 to new contracts. Preferably all three. It would give us so much more room and time to plan for life without them.

  14. Unacceptable, this summer has the potential to be very damaging long term. No signings is one thing but not even contacting first team players on contract extensions is really poor. What’s the plan exactly? Don’t sign a replacement now and not extending fucks us over next summer. Add VVD to the mix and Trent and I am actually worried at this point.

I think this gets ironed out after a few games. Mo has had a full summer with Slot and can get a feel for how he’ll be used within the team.

It could also be a flip side thing where no formal talks have happened because Mo has decided he wants to leave. That is as possible as Liverpool admin fucking it up

  16. AdministrativeLaugh2 on

I’m not really surprised we’ve not had formal talks yet. The last five months of last season were concerning and the club are hardly going to want to pay a 32-year-old £400k a week for three years if that’s his new normal instead of a blip.

They’ll probably give this season a few weeks then if he’s firing like normal, open talks and try to get it done quickly. As the screenshot says, Salah is happy to bide his time so there’s no rush yet.

  17. AngryLiverpoolFan on

Neto went for £50+m and he only scored 11 goals last season. We simply do not have the spending power to buy a replacement. Sign him up for another 2 years + buying an understudy would be the best. As raw as u want, as long as he can learn from Salah all will be good

  18. A few questions for me around this:

Would Salah take a 2-year deal? It seems unlikely, but giving him 3 or more years on a salary likely to be demanded around £400k a week seems very risky for a 32 year old who still relies on being explosive to be highly effective. And a 2 year deal with sign-on fees etc still only guarantees one more year with Salah than he is currently contracted to.

Salah is likely to be offered 5-year deals by Saudis, America etc. But Salah’s value in these markets is unlikely to decrease by this time next year, so for him, playing the year out and signing elsewhere on a free makes as much sense as anything else.

Does signing Salah for 2 or 3 years even, with his costs and contracts, make as much sense as, for instance, signing 2 RW’s with great potential to improve and maintain resale value at the club? I’d be tempted to keep Salah regardless, but the club as a business, and even on the pitch, may see the benefit of bringing in two hungry players around 22-25 years old who between them can rotate in the RW position and contribute to the team for less per year than one Salah will cost.

Due to Salah’s expectations to play every game he’s fit, the club won’t be able to sign a starting quality player until Salah leaves, because these players (Kudus, Bakayoko etc) will not want to leave a club they’re playing at every 3-5 days for a club they’ll only play 10 games or so a season in. So would two quality replacements next season be better in the long term, and letting Salah leave next summer, than committing to a new deal for Salah and letting him slowly reduce in output and quality on Liverpool’s time?

Salah has the potential to play at a high level for a few more seasons, but one bad hamstring injury (like last season) and he could be a shadow of his former self, sitting at the club on the highest wages, for the next 3 seasons.

Personally, I can see the argument either way. His cost, his international brand recognition, his quality and his fitness all lend weight to the renewal argument, but like with Van Djik, if we renew these players, we’re effectively handing out the biggest contracts in the club’s history to players who only have the potential to maintain or decline in output throughout the spell of their contracts. And this potentially blocks the pathway into the club for the next Salah, the next Van Djik, to be brought in and compete through their peak years.

Trent’s contract is a far bigger priority for the club. There are as many potential negatives as potential positives in renewing Salah and VvD.

  19. Happy for them to have assessed it because it is a big call but this really needs to be wrapped up this window. We either need to sell him or get the contract sorted.

Letting any of the 3 lads walk on a free is not an option and would be a terrible start to the Richard Hughes’ tenure (not even going to start on the no signings)

  20. Smart_Barracuda49 on

He is obviously declining but he is a special player. He will always be able to pop up with a goal or an assist sometimes out of nothing, sometimes whilst playing poorly. I didn’t even think he was that great against Ipswich, certainly not poor but he wasn’t playing that great, yet he got a goal and an assist, without that we don’t win the game.

I also think he is such a good passer of the ball and so intelligent that when his pace is really gone he could play as a number 10 and play a bit deeper. He doesn’t have to beat a man, he can still win us matches in the next few years by just making really good and intelligent passes. I doubt he’s asking for a pay rise, I don’t see the issue extending for 2/3 years on the same wages.

  21. guestaccount901284 on

He’s on similar wages to Casemiro, Varane, Rashford, Sterling, Saka and Havertz btw.

Don’t let this club fool you that £350k a week is some obscene wage in modern football. Salah deserves every penny. Nearly £2 million a week in wages has been cleared since Henderson, Fabinho, Ox, Keita, Matip and Thiago all left. That’s not been reinvested in the squad either in contract renewals or incomings.

If even 1 of Salah, Virg, or Trent walks on a free. Its an absolute disgrace. No ifs or buts.

  22. If age is a factor in club thinking, then the club ain’t thinking straight.

Mo easily has a bio age of 29 or younger. He’s also our talisman who makes the team step up to his pace. He still terrifies opposing defenders despite losing his hair. I’m sure he’s not asking for something outrageous like a 4 or 5 year contract, he’s wise enough to be reasonable. If it’s 3, give it to him damnit.

  23. This summer really confuses me, so we aren’t adding to the squad because the board and slot are content with the team and say that we don’t really need any additions but yet in less than a year are ready to lose in three key positions ?

  24. TheEgyptianScouser on

I think we’re fine tbh. I would get worried if the talks started and and no agreement was reached.

On a completely unrelated note Klopp was right about Hughes.

  25. there is practically zero risk to renewing salah and vvd.

the general issue with signing older players on deals is that they’ll decline, and you’re stuck paying huge wages.

that’s not an issue with these two as both the MLS and Saudis will at any point, desperately want to bring them over.

so why not extend their deals? we have the perfect avenue to sell.

  26. Due-Sherbert3097 on

This is disgraceful and made even worst from the possibility that we probably won’t even replace him

  27. I don’t buy into it tbh; if the club are hesitating because of his age then why the fuck haven’t we signed a younger player to phase in?

  28. CabbageStockExchange on

He’s shown zero signs of decline and if anything, added a new wrinkle becoming a better facilitator.

It would be disastrous to let him walk

  29. KloppersToppers on

A 3 year contract extension on similar money should be a no brainer for me. Right now there’s no reason to think he’ll drop off. And if it did happen, then he wouldn’t be difficult to offload him anyway if needed. Dude is a high profile name.

  30. LovelyCushionedHead on

We are on the verge of complete collapse. I don’t think enough people appreciate what a knife’s edge we’re balancing on.

  31. Salahlalala11 on

Is Richard Hughes getting a bonus for every time he fucks this club? Get the useless cunt out of Liverpool football club for christs sake. It’s incredible how many people defend that man’s incompetence

  32. Spiritual_Jay778 on

Of course, Salah is no longer at his peak. Of course Salah will continue to decline. Of course Salah won’t dribble past 2-3 opponents very often anymore.
Of course Salah is a very very expensive employee by Liverpool standards.

But Edwards/Hughes/FSG seem to be working to ensure that the decline of the Liverpool football club will happen much faster than the decline of footballer Mo Salah ever could.

  33. I feel like an article like this one saying we’re gonna lose salah has been happening every season for the past 3 seasons or so. Last year, at this time, he was gone in the winter window. Then, for sure this summer. All it really amounted to was clickbait and wishful thinking from our rivals. IMO, salah won’t leave until he’s done breaking Henry’s records. To be undisputedly in the conversation with that guy is a helluva drug.

  34. Smart_But123581321 on

Hughes really isn’t doing a good job, is he? No signings and letting 3 of the top 4 most important Liverpool players go. With the likely signing of Mamardashvili, I’m surprised Hughes hasn’t tried finding a club for Alisson.

  35. Area51_CowboyBebop on

I can only think of 1 other big club (Barcelona) that is certifiably worse about kicking the can down the road. Very weird club. I hope I’m wrong, but I suspect we’re all going to find out just how much Klopp overperforming on the field and as a man manager was papering over cracks in several departments.
