Before Vincent Kompany was appointed, Max Eberl had a conversation with Joshua Kimmich and told him that he wanted a 'new start' with the player. After the problems he had under Thomas Tuchel, Kimmich and Eberl agreed to 'try to find the way to the old Kimmich again'. This initiative by Eberl opened the door again to the player, which seemed to be closed at the time
After Kompany's appointment, Eberl and Freund sat with the coach to discuss the plans with Kimmich. Kompany was of the opinion that Kimmich is not a defensive #6, but that he needed a more defensive player alongside him. The trio quickly agreed to go for a defensive midfielder in João Palhinha, who will allow Kimmich to play a more attacking #8 role and find his old strength. That was communicated to Kimmich, who got full support from the coach and the people in charge
With a contract expiring next year, negotiations are now to take place. An extension is possible should Kimmich agree to a pay cut. He currently earns €15m fixed plus €5m bonuses per year, which is still too much from the club's standpoint. From a footballing point of view, Kimmich's perspective under Vincent Kompany is now clear
