  1. Thought this pod was one of their best for a while, with an in depth discussion on United’s new structures in and out of possession. Did a summary below of the main talking points, but highly recommend listening for anyone looking for deeper analysis of the football:

    **Out of possession**

    – They start with the most noticeable change – the new 4-2-4 zonal pressing shape, and its situational flexibility compared to last year’s man to man 4-4-2.

    – The importance of press triggers, intuition, and experience when it comes to pressing. Detailing why Mount makes it shine.

    – Weaknesses in the press due to Rashford and Bruno, and the potential improvements.

    – Can United sustain the high press for longer periods, or do they need to pick their moments better?

    – Problems caused by opposing forwards dropping in to create passes around the back of the press.

    **In possession**

    – They first acknowledge that the buildup is drastically improved, United rely less on direct passes to move the ball forward and did far better against Brighton’s press vs previous years.

    – Still dependent on overloading the wings, but with shorter and more consistent passing structures.

    – The gap in technical ability is being leveraged, with a lot of one touch technical buildup moves, rondo galore.

    – Unfortunately the pressing intensity in the front 4 results in a dropoff in quality of this passing further up the pitch. May explain the issues beating Brighton’s offside traps.

There is a great question they pose at the end of of both phase of play discussions. **How does Ten Hag define success when it comes to pressing and buildup?**

If United is now consistently earning high ball wins, and building up past the half way line, what is the plan to convert these to goals? Are they abandoning positional advantages with this style, and making chances difficult to create and convert? What is the plan once quick transitional moments come to pass? (often resulting in impatient forward passes and shots)

These are some of the questions remaining for Ten Hag to answer this season, but there is a more sustainable approach to build from.
