Why did he change his mind?

  1. It just came down to miscommunication between him and MATS I think and due to the fact that Eric hasn’t started much in that position. Bad mistake but a mistake nonetheless

Nope. That entire 🟥 fiasco is on Ter Stegen. He had atleast 4 more open options to play that pass to.

As to Eric’s movement, it’s something done very often. It dragged his marker & left open space behind him. More importantly, Ter Stegen can see there’s a man on Eric. You don’t hv to berate the movement just because Ter Stegen did something so stupid.

  3. You could argue Eric “baited” there but honestly even if he did not stop, what is he gonna do? He would have nowhere to pass really.

Ter Stegen waited way to long with the pass and should have passed it to his left or right to one of our unmarked defenders or just a long ball anywhere.

Now, the game is over, we lost. Just go next, mistakes happen and no matter how frustrating it is, finding a scapegoat isn’t the way to go. Instead now it’s important that these mistakes are approached in training to avoid it for future games.

  4. It seems he ran thinking nobody was behind him, looked back and saw defender. Changed direction, but ball was passed at same time.

He doesn’t seem comfortable getting the ball facing out goal, which is very important for the pivot position. Maybe just panicked as well.

In any case shit happens, better now than in knockouts. Just unlucky with so many injuries in DM and CB spots.

  5. Eric Garcia pulled a body feint and tricked MATS, but people just all blamed MATS for this pass. A direct red card offense following this pass was also not on him.

Since he noted Minamino was approaching him, he thought Ter Stegen will pass it to the right or left. So he did a fake side move to confuse Minamino so that Ter Stegen will be free of pressure for his side pass. Stegen had a brain fart moment there for no specific reason. Nobody on his right mind would attempt this risky pass unless it was an elite player like Puyol on the recieving end who would stand his ground no matter what.

  7. Because his mark followed him. He tried to create space between him and his mark, so he gets close to get the ball. Ter Stegen doesn’t pass in that moment, his mark catches up to him, so he does 180 since now there’s space behind.

Ter Stegen had to pass the ball like 5 seconds before to his feet, or pass it to his back when Eric turns. Eric is not a midfielder so the move isn’t as smooth and the timing can be different, but it’s not the best pass even.

(Passing it to anyone else was better tho)

  8. Unnecessary blame put on by everyone on ter stegen but that doesn’t exclude the fact that he is not performing well but still doesn’t warrant the hate he has been getting.

    Eric on other hand, yeaaa.

  9. If you take a bigger angle you can see that Eric cannot pass to the RB because a Monaco player is blocking the passing lane. If he received the pass sooner he could, but when his passing option disappears he moves to the side to create space in the middle.

This is 100% on Ter Stegen. He should have passed sooner or passed to another player.

From this red card, I got to learn a new thing about what a clear goal scoring chance is. I always thought of it as that’s the last line of defense and behind the attacker. I had got confused by the Araujo incident as he was arguing then that he was not the last line of defense.

In this case, Eric is not the last line of defense but it’s still a clear goal scoring chance obviously.

I believe we are overreacting. It’s concerning that our team makes more amateur mistakes like these. But, I believe these are bound to happen due to the fast nature of buildup and the quality of players.

  11. He hasn’t changed his mind; this style is a recurring pattern with Flick, especially since he doesn’t have exceptional defensive midfielder who can play under pressure like Busquets, for example. That’s why you’ll always find the defensive midfielder dropping between the center-backs to drag the player marking him, creating space for the number 8 player, whether it’s Pedri or Casado, who you’ll see dropping on his own in the same situation. But Ter Stegen decided not to pass the ball to him.

  12. The pass was terrible, no doubt about that, but do you really have to foul the attacker in the 10th minute in a situation like that? Worst case, we go 1–0 down with 80 minutes to recover.

  13. from this part of the whole picture u can only tell that eric making move in the direction in which he want o get a ball so mats should pass there, he send clear signal that he want it there, he already start doing move in direction just look at his legs movement

  14. When a giveaway leads to a goal conceded the ultimate responsibility is with the player on the ball. This is why decision making is such a desired quality in football. Eric baiting calls are hilarious. Ter Stegan picked the worst possible pass period.

  15. Eric did not want to pass the ball but he advanced towards Stegen and then for the striker to follow him and there would be space behind him so he changed his mind but there was a misunderstanding from Stegen and also he was late in passing which resulted in a red card
