    ON THIS DAY 2016:
Newcastle United hosted Championship leaders Norwich City in a mid-week game under the lights. Rafa’s team had had a slower start than they hoped in their promotion charge, and had a huge opportunity to stake their claim as title contenders.

Newcastle opened the scoring in the first half, as Matt Ritchie put in a beautiful, outside of the foot cross, for Dwight Gayle to smash home from inside the six yard box. Norwich equalised right before half-time as Dorrans converted a penalty after Gouffran was adjudged to have brought down Robbie Brady.

Early in the second half, Norwich took the lead as Cameron Jerome curled in a glorious effort from the edge of the area. Future Mag, Jacob Murphy added the third with a deflected effort.

Gayle quickly pulled Newcastle back in to the game with a hugely underrated goal. Calmly controlling a fifty yard Shelvey lobbed through ball in the box, against an oncoming keeper, before slotting home. As the game entered extra time, it looked like Norwich had sealed an away win, but this Newcastle team was built of stronger stuff.

Many fans had headed for the exit, including my mate Jack, who was sat next to me in the Gallowgate, as Gouffran headed home a Yedlin cross, started by a Shelvey long ball, to snatch the equaliser at the death.

If that goal took the roof of St James’ Park, the next one supernova’d the whole stadium. A minute later, a Shelvey long ball, controlled on the edge of the area by number nine Gayle, was smashed bottom corner on his weak foot, completing a perfect hat-trick, winning the game to absolutely staggering scenes!

The win took Newcastle from ninth to third, and knocked Norwich off the top spot, and felt like the turning point in the Magpie’s season.
Manager Rafa Benitez was beaming in his post match-presser:

“I am the kind of manager who gets excited, but especially inside because I am really proud when I see the team reacting. I am really proud of them.”
