[David Ornstein] 🚨 EXCL: Dominic Solanke called up by England for #NationsLeague games v Greece & Finland. Only previous #ENG cap 2017 Brazil friendly but 27yo striker’s impressive Tottenham form rewarded. Rogers, Maddison, Bowen, Maguire among those not in

  1. That means Madders is going to keep on improving in the upcoming weeks. That’s sad for him but great for us.

I don’t follow the England national team that closely but how was he not called up last year? Not like Toney came back and was playing well.

Very hard for Maddison to make the squad at any point in the next few years unless he *really* steps up his form. Attacking midfielder is probably the position England have the most options for alongside right-back. Palmer, Foden, Bellingham, Eze and Elliott were all better than him in the last 6 months and there’s hardly room for all of them already.

Hopefully he shows he deserves a place in the squad in the next few months though.

  4. Good on Dom! Although hopefully he’s not playing full 90s – need him to recover a bit during this international break.

Hopefully Maddison doesn’t get demotivated by this, and keeps up his good form. Feel for him as there is so much world class talent in that position (Palmer, Bellingham..)

  5. Madders is trying to work his way into a very loaded position, it’s tough for him. Given that a large part of the issue with calling him up is his inconsistency, it could be that it’s better to wait and see how he gets on with us. If running him alongside Deki helps him stay in top form (remains to be seen long-term, though he looks great right now), it also gives some ideas on how to play him in the England squad.

  6. Madders seemingly is going to be the Andy Cole of this era of England squads, despite his club scoring records Cole never really managed to get ahead of Shearer, Owen and Sheringham, even Fowler, Wright and Ferdinand couldn’t either to be fair.

Maddison has Bellingham, Palmer, Foden ahead of him for that one position he’s going to find it extremely hard to get in, all he can do is keep performing at high levels and give the manager whoever it will be a selection headache.

  7. The problem for madders is he’s on the older side, and there’s players like palmer and eze in front of him who are much younger. And these guys have found it hard to start too.

Unless madders plays like KDB and gets an assist or goal every match, he’s not going to get picked unfortunately.

  8. Morgan Rogers not being included is insane, probably the most in form attacking midfielder along with Palmer. Maddison did deserve the call up but I’m not too surprised he’s been left out
