Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has won September 2024’s Premier League Save of the Month award for his heroics against Crystal Palace.

Onana dived low to his left to keep out Eddie Nketiah’s long-range shot and then somehow recovered to keep out Ismaila Sarr’s follow-up, jumping from the floor to his left to push a shot from inside the six-yard box out for a corner.

Peter Schmeichel, a five-time Premier League title-winner with Man Utd and one of the best goalkeepers in the competition’s history, said: “You don’t expect it to go through him [the legs of Matthijs de Ligt] so not only does he have to react, he also has to get down and get a very strong hand to it. But the recovery is just amazing. A very, very good save. He’s stepping up and winning points for his team.”

Not only was it a stunning double save but it also helped Man Utd to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park, giving Onana one of four clean sheets already this season, meaning he leads the race for the 2024/25 Golden Glove award.

It is the second time Onana has won the award, having also done so in April with an astonishing stop to deny Burnley’s Lyle Foster.

The 28-year-old Cameroonian claims the prize after votes from the public were combined with those of a panel of experts, topping a shortlist featuring six stunning stops by goalkeepers across the month.

    2024/25 Premier League Save winners

    August: David Raya (Arsenal)
    September: Andre Onana (Man Utd)

  2. Onana has impressed this season. Our goal deficit would have been a lot worse if not for him.

  3. One of the more consistent performers this season.

Good on him, bouncing back after his debut season.

  4. His champions league campaign last year will be hard to live down, but our shit goal differential last season and this year would be even worse without him. He’s a good keeper

  5. Hope awards like this helps boost his confidence. He still has a mistake or sloppy moment in him but then can pull off a wonder save in the same match, so ironing out those issues would be great. Still a big improvement so far after last season though (and no, it wasn’t *just* his CL performances that had people questioning him).

Credit where credit is due, he’s done well this season and we’ll probably be a lot worse if it wasn’t for him.

That said, some of the goals he conceeded are so frustrating. His positioning isn’t the best at times (thinking of Mo Salah’s and Twenty goals).

  7. After a lot of justified criticism last season, I have to praise him. He’s been one of the few bright spots this season

Consistently put in performances this season. Sometimes it’d be him and a couple others who weren’t shite. Our goal difference really suites us actually which is sad.

  9. So glad he’s finding his feet. Been one of our only real consistent performers this season.

He’s pulled out some brilliant saves whilst here, a few overshadowed by some goals conceded. But he’s a solid shot stopper
