Stating the obvious here, but the Rooney appointment has to be one of the most disastrous appointments in championship history. Don’t think it’s any exaggeration to say they’d be comfortably up if he wasn’t appointed. As someone who recently experienced relegation in large part due to the wrong man being in charge for too long, I can commiserate. Hope you come back up soon.

“Quick, get Rooney on the line” – Brum owners probably

  3. I_miss_Chris_Hughton on

Everyone attached to bringing in rooney needs to resign. Today and permanently.

  4. What a disaster from their board/owners.

Would Birmingham have made the play offs under Eustace? Probably not.

Would they have gotten relegated under him? Absolutely not.

Who would’ve thought that looking at QPR over the last two years and thinking “yep, I’ll have some of that” wasn’t a recipe for success?

  6. DuomoDiSirio on

I genuinely feel awful for the fans, but from strictly a management perspective, it’s absolutely deserved. Utter shitshow.

  7. going_down_leg on

In terms football it’s absolutely deserved. But pretty gutted, especially has Plymouth and Blackburn both shithoused victories. See r/championship again soon hopefully

  8. Going down despite winning must feel rough. That being said, us and Preston now get the honour of longest current stint in the championship, which is the only honour we’ll win for a while!

  9. I don’t think this is what was meant by having “a winning mentality and a culture of ambition” by sacking Eustace

Deserved either way. The slide down the table has been incredible to watch.

  10. I feel for the Birmingham fans, this has been such a harsh season in the relegation zone going down with 50 points. Especially with the owners making a terrible decisions with manager appointments.

That 0-0 with Rotherham was an absolute disaster. Think you’ll come straight back up.

  12. NGL, this is funny. Blues director after sacking Eustace said this:

    > Yesterday morning I met with John Eustace in Birmingham and shared the reasons for the decision to part company. I thanked John for his hard work. I also told him that every Blues fan will be forever grateful for keeping the Club in the Sky Bet Championship last year. **Tom Wagner expressed to him when they spoke later in the day that if we had been relegated, Knighthead would not have invested in Birmingham**.

If it’s any consolation L1 is very underrated from a fan perspective, lot of big clubs and nice away days to enjoy… and also Exeter.

  14. Down on 50 points, a high total to go down on but that just shows you how well some of the other teams down there did. Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday, and QPR all did their jobs against the odds really – we didn’t.

I don’t really have any complaints, table doesn’t lie. Next season will be the key to deciding if there might still be a bright future or not.

  15. Farewell Birmingham, perhaps you’ll be back relatively soon. Who knows?

  16. Feel awful for the fans, who’ve had no say in the terrible decisions made by the owners.

Also feel a certain amount of schadenfreude about the owners themselves though, and players like Sanderson, Dozzell, Laird and Tyler Roberts, who were all terrible for us (the last two in particular, who came very close to deservedly relegating us last year as well.)

Hope you clear your squad and boardroom out, get people in who know what they’re doing, rebuild and come back soon.

Sorry for Brum fans. I hope Tom Wagner and his cronies feel like fucking idiots (But I doubt they do).

Congrats to Plymouth and Sheff Wed, they fought and earned their place next year. Some awful decisions coupled with bad luck for us this season, I think the owners underestimated the championship and thought we could limp along to a rebuild in the summer. Time to show whether they can get on-field decisions right and not just talk a big game.

I’m sad to see Birmingham relegated, as they’ve been a constant since we came down. It sucks for the fan, but the owners kind of deserve it for the Rooney ridiculous-ness. Wonder what they will do manager-wise now. Mowbray hasn’t had much to do with the relegation, but maybe given what’s gone on a clean break would be best? Also haven’t see on heard anything of him since he went to hospital – forget Kate Middleton, WHERE IS TONY MOWBRAY?

Honestly thought they’d find a way out like they normally do. That squad should be nowhere near the relegation zone.

  21. holy shit even those wankers from HK didn’t relegate this team to league one wtf

i’ve seen those wankers manage teams in HK and they were genuinely awful

  22. lordflashheat on

Oh well, signing about us going down last week was funny, we see you next year.

  23. spiritofbuck on

I feel sorry for the Blues fans but the ownership got what they deserved for sacking Eustace

  24. EyePiece108 on

So, Eustace got his revenge. You couldn’t sell this script to anyone, even *Welcome to Wrexham.*

They were great to us and helped us big time, so I’m not too happy about what’s happened, more kinda shocked it *has* happened. But then, you *can’t* change managers this often in one season and get away with it.

All they had to do was keep Eustace. Weren’t they in the play-off places when they sacked him? A legend for us, who was doing well for Brum. That wasn’t good enough and they went for…..*Rooney?!?* Absolutely bonkers. Anyone at BCFC who made that decision should resign before the inevitable Cup/League game vs Solihull Moors.

Good luck in L1, Brum. I’ll miss our A45 Derby.

I remember towards the start of the season when you *battered* us at Ashton Gate with Eustace in charge. We were all left with a sense that you were going places, like the team and the fans knew it.

Sorry lads, must be heartbreaking. Hopefully you’ll be back in 14 months.

  26. Interesting fact: Birmingham City has the largest imaginary stadium in League 1 at 60,000, closely followed by Wrexham with 55,000.

  27. I’d love to say it’s been a pleasure but it’s really been over a decade of shit. Still, hoping to be back in a year for more torture.

Tom Brady: “Why is this bad? We’re in League 1, thats the top league”

  29. jrbill1991 on

Wayne Rooney was already a total failure at the Championship level as a manager even before they appointed him, it was written in the sky it was never going to work, from day one.

    That single move relegated them.

  30. MrBismarck on

When Birmingham were sixth the owners looked at it and said “if we bring in a big name there’s a good chance we get out of this division!”

Love the Karma on display here, back in September/October the Blues fans were telling us all about the Five Year plan, the Investment, the Blue Wave. They were Champions League in waiting and it was all up from here. We were all lucky to play them, well I guess they got their wish, we were lucky to play them this season as we won’t get to do it next.
