With this rumour, who’s the best player to make a direct transfer to your club from a rival?

  1. Joey Beauchamp (RIP); bought him from Swindon for less than they’d paid about a year after they bought him from West Ham who’d paid £1m for him (effectively saving Oxford’s future) without him ever making an appearancs for them.

    Wes Morgan.

I still can’t believe a 28 year old we signed for £800,000 in the Championship captained us to a Premier League win and scored in the Champions League knockouts.

  3. We’ve never really bought direct from the unwashed. Closest we had would be Chopra who will forever be remembered for intentionally missing a sitter, trying to defend himself only to confess to it when he turned ultra mag on Twitter.

I remember Warnock going on a spending spree at Hillsborough when we signed Quinn, Bromby, Geary and Morrison.

I also remember at least a rumour that Quinn had an SWFC tattoo.

Anyway, here’s an article from 2019: [Remembering Alan Quinn’s historic winner against Sheffield Wednesday, exactly 14 years ago today](https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-remembering-alan-quinns-historic-winner-against-sheffield-wednesday-exactly-14-years-ago-today-1330823)

My dad would probably say Terry Curran. But I remember being heartbroken when Alan Quinn and Leigh Bromby left for United.

If we sign him I reckon he’ll be the first player we’ve signed directly from them. Accepting that he’s a free agent so poss not a direct signing. I think.

Matty Taylor. Was absolutely banging them in for Rovers and then City found out about his ridiculously cheap release clause and triggered it. Poor bloke had to live with police outside his house for a few weeks until he found somewhere else to live and all sorts. The best bit about it all was that this all happened on deadline day.

I can’t think of too many players to switch colours down here.

Famously Redknapp did it of course.

Jon Viafara being the last I think?

Didn’t quasie also make the trip with Redknapp?

  10. I can’t think of many options, it’s either going to have to be Nigel Quashie or Ricardo Fuller… unless we count Ward Prowse who is from a Portsmouth family and would almost certainly have been in their academy had their finances not gone tits up

Gordon Strachan. Wednesday had a bid accepted from Manure but he decided to join us and became Captain as we won the second division and then the last first division before it became the Prem. When he left he went to our biggest rivals, Coventry.

Johnny Giles, Gordon Strachan, and the Little Scum Bastard himself, Dan James.

Wasn’t direct but I really wanna give a shoutout to Joleon Lescott.

Became a Wolves legend, pissed them off by joining Albion, was actually very good, went to Villa, pissed them off by being shit

    West Brom legend honestly

Dave Wilkins, Clive Allen, John Collins come to mind but it’s been a little while since we’ve been at the level of the scum, guess there was the loic Remy transfer a decade ago and we nabbed Jake Clarke-Salter from their academy

I wish we had a proper rival 🙁

We’ve barely played any team within 50 miles of us for the past 20 years.

We signed a striker called Joel Grant on a free from Exeter after their fans had chipped in to pay his wages, which was quite funny. He turned down a new contract with them to sign for us. He was pretty good for us as well.

We bought Jamie Mackie from them too, although there were three divisions between us at the time. Scored twice on his debut as a sub.
