As for an actual player… Coutinho surely? Sure great before he came to Villa but he arrived and to some was almost gonna be our saviour and he basically did nothing. What 6 ish goals from 40+ appearances?
AaronStudAVFC on
Comfortably Gabby Agbonlahor – Maybe not within the fanbase, but widely recognised as our PL top goalscorer and a ‘club legend’ when the reality is he was wank and scored a paltry 74 goals over more than a decade and basically coasted on some goals against the blues. Didn’t care about the club when we needed him most, but that’s another problem entirely.
Lonely_Leopard_8555 on
I’m going to go with Laursen. Sure he had a great season or two but was mainly injured, and don’t think he was any better than Southgate, Ugo, Mellberg, Mings.

Controversial one this, but Juan Pablo Angel.
Loved him and he was great for a season or 2 but some villa fans talk about him as if heâs up there in the Pantheon of all time great premier league strikers.

Iâd have to personally say that my pick is Gabby. Just didnât care towards the end. Didnât score nearly as many as he shouldâve considering how long he was at the club. Goes down as a legend but really turned up for derby games and not much else
dukenukem2015 on
Probably would have to go with Collymore, with the exception of his Atletico goal he disappointed and I expected so much more.

You have to define overrated really. Overrated in terms of actual ability? Or overrated based on his position in the history books?
If it’s the first one I’m actually not sure. The second one is 100% Gabby.
As for underrated I think Konsa is very highly rated. Even in the national team. Not sure how anyone can say he’s underrated. I would rather go for Delaney.

If you mean overrated by us then Benteke. I still think of him as one of the greatest forwards ever, but he was never the same after he left. Pool and palace fans think our opinions on him are crazy

Absolutely love the guy but probably John Carew. I’ve fond memories of this guy, but feel as though he was always seen as bigger and better (than me and you) than he actually was.

Ironically, I’m again picking Steve Sidwell. Turns out besides that really heads up play he did once helping us get a goal off a throw in while he wasn’t even in the match, he didn’t actually do much for us on the pitch.

Ron Vlaar. I’m not sure what was so concrete about him

People going for the easy shot on Gabby, but he did have a few good seasons and was exciting to watch between 2007 and 2010.
But for me, it’s our current 29th most expensive purchase, the ÂŁ9.5m spent on N’Zogbia for a return of 5 goals and 13 assists over 5 years was absolutely crap. He was completely over rated at the time and no where near good enough to replace Young or Downing.

So many fucking contenders for this award. But here are my top 3 contenders.
Ron Vlaar, nicknames Concrete Ron, when it should habe been more like wet paper towel Ron. Did he play more than 20 games a season? But that wasnât the worst. Shit at tackling, shit positioning and awful clearances.
Idrissa Gueye, if you cherry picked stats he was one of the best defensive midfielders when playing for us. But he gave the ball away as quickly as he won it on so many occasions, and often in dangerous positions. Sloppy passingâŠ
Benteke, when he was good, he was phenomenal. But he was only phebomenal for 2 halves of a total of 6 with us. Sure he was injured for half a season as well, but for the other 3 he was mediocre, with a short spell of decent every now and then.
Drogalov on
Gabby, he played in an era where having endless pace could get bags of goals. He’s got no footballing brain and that’s gone through into his punditry. The day he’s no longer our top EPL goalscorer can’t come soon enough

Are we basing these on us as a fan base or are we for some reason concerning ourselves with others?
Surely not a single Villa fan doesn’t think konsa isn’t as good as he is, i don’t see how he’s underrated within this sub. So are we here to show how much we care what other fans think?

Overrated would be Watkins. Not saying he isn’t fantastic but when you consider his xG and the amount of opportunities or sitters he misses, he is a big outlier.
He gets a lot of hype and coverage but only gets half the opportunities due to the team around him.

Bosko Balaban needs a mention, though this is more likely due to the scouting department at the time.

Ok, might be controversial, but Benteke. 13 goals in 29 games for Villa before moving to Liverpool, being average, moving to Palace, being average beige moving to the states.

habib beye for me, signed on big wages by MoN, barely played but saw out full 5 years contributing almost nothing on field, turned down possibilities to move prefering to draw big wages from club, often training with reserves
Pires, he refused to even move to area instead taking a taxi to and from London every day for training at expense of club and spent half time injured.
Jermaine jenas was pretty poor & seemed to volunteer for treatment table alot
