  1. Lee Hendrie always looked like he’d be brilliant next year. Then suddenly he was 28 and washed up.

  2. Hepburn Murphy? I expected massive things from him.

Special mention to crowley, robinson, collins, Graham

  3. The sheer amount of space over worrying whether or not Rushian Hepburn-Murphy was going to sign a contract or not took in my head in the Xia days warrants a mention, but there must be others

I swear I mention this guy on here once a day
but Sam Williams.

He was a defensive midfielder who we moved to striker and he was just pure goals for the reserves. Like insane numbers
and his career very quickly fizzled out. Think he dropped down to amateur football by mid 20s and then his bio is just a vague list of teams from 27 onwards. Not even sure if he’s still playing

  5. I’d go with Luke Moore. I thought he was going to be an absolute beast when he first broke through, but he never really hit the heights.

Stephen Cooke – he was lauded as the next Cowans for years but his career was blighted by injuries and he never made the grade unfortunately.

  7. Christian Benteke, hear me out
he came to us at 22 and immediately almost bagged 20 goals. He was inconsistent after injury and really only produced for ~1.5 seasons, but the flashes we saw when he was on were world class, enough for Liverpool to buy. Imagine if he’d stuck around and developed into a consistent striker in his prime. Obviously a huge what if, but had the tools to be world class when he was at Villa (and his career nosedived after he left). Most of the guys mentioned were academy players who never panned out but Benteke showed he had what it took at highest level, but never developed into what he should have

  8. Is it harsh to say Jack again? Filled up the trophy cabinet, but gone from the talks of being the next gazza to a city cog.

  9. Gary Gardner was supposed to be the next Frank Lampard. I know we’re talking about potential football ability here but Albrighton and Grealish both had the potential to be club legends with us.

  10. Nathan Delfouneso. Used to tear it up at youth level. Didn’t flourish much in the senior game.

  11. Collymore. Not just because of his talent but the hero at Villa he might have become

Honourable mention to Gary Gardner. Kept hearing he was going to be a world beater, sadly we never saw what those scouts did

    The Moore brothers.

Both were talked about as the big hope and had first team chances. The hope remained for quite some time, never came good.

Not sure if this counts as “wasted” talent given what happened to him, but Luc Nilis could have been great

  14. I would like to mention Samir Carruthers. I think he looked fresh and lively in his debut and definitely thought he would become a starter in the PL as soon as he gained a bit of muscle. For various reasons I’m also keeping half an eye on Oxford United and Harrow Borough. A few years after his debut with us, I saw him on the bench of Oxford and couldn’t really believe he had fallen that far. Give it another few years and he is turning up for a game against Harrow Borough. Glad he got his 15 minutes of fame pissing in a pint glass the Cheltenham.

I also remember seeing Chris Herd come on against Man United for his debut as a scrawny teenager. Fast forward a few months, and he’s grown to be a muscular lad. Playing at right back against Wolves he was absolutely amazing. A regular under McLeish I thought he would go on to become a decent lower half PL player. That was until Bent fucked his misses and he started drinking to cope with it, with a couple of other reasons. I really hoped this guy would become something. As McLeish once said, «he’s not the most technically gifted player, but he’s got a big heart».

  15. Carney Chukwuemeka.

Could’ve been a really special player if he remained humble and worked hard with one of the best coaches in world football.

But no. Wanted the London life style, massive paycheck and a shortcut to the top.

It saddens me to say Stan Collymore. If it had’ve clicked we’d still be singing about him now. He was the missing piece of the puzzle or so we hoped, alas it wasn’t to be.

I have lots of time for him and love his views on Villa and absolutely he’s one of us, but I think it was a real legends opportunity for him.

  17. Probably just an honorable mention, but I’m still gutted we only saw a flash of Moussa Diaby at his best

  18. I’ve got to say Stan Collymore. The partnership of him and Yorke could have been incredible and absolutely iconic. It’s such a shame how it went.
