    ON THIS DAY 1997:

Newcastle United hosted FC Barcelona in the Champion’s League in a deafening St James’ Park. Newcastle opened the scoring in the first half, after Tino Asprilla was ‘taken down’ in the penalty area, and converting in the subsequent penalty. It looked like “Asprilla, might well be in the mood tonight.”

The second came from the most electric wide play you’re ever likely to see. Northern Irishman Keith Gillespie stormed past his marker, and whipped in a stunning cross at pace for Columbian Asprilla to leap “like a gazelle” to head it home.

The third goal of the night, was a carbon copy of the last goal, but at the other end. As again, Gillespie tore past the Catalan fullback and pinged in a perfect cross for Asprilla to head and seal his hat-trick.

Despite two late goals from Luis Figo, and Luis Enrique, Newcastle held it together to record a famous win. The deafening noise in this game will be fondly remembered by all who attended, including a seven year old me. You never forget your first.

That 2nd goal is the sort of header you just don’t seem to see anymore. Absolute bullet. Beautiful.
