Lineup v Young Boys

  1. No changes is a big surprise, but hey, no doubt that this is pretty much as strong as we can go right now and I can’t complain about that. Nice to see Bailey back on the bench too. Hopefully we can be in a position by half time to make some switches and maybe give the likes of Durán and Maatsen more time, but this should be a good one.

  2. WTF is up at Right Back? Purchase a €10m 🇷🇸 RB w/ UCL experience (Ned) and bench them for Bogarde a CB/CM playing out of position?!?!

  3. Did Martin O’Neil sneak back in charge?
We just going to play the same 11 every single game from now till the end of the season lol?

This Bogarde situation is so weird

  4. Interesting, I wonder if Unai will do some rotation for the Wolves game… I think the lineup is fair though, you want the core team to have at least one CL game under their belt before we face Bayern where we would be starting the first team anyway. Also the secondary players will get a runout in the League Cup one week from today.

  5. Poor jaden can’t catch a break. Maybe they don’t want to risk him on a plastic pitch, but with the Bailey injury I feel like he was probably in unais thoughts over the games since west ham, but has had about 10 mins because of injuries

  6. I’m not sure why people were expecting rotation for the Champions league ffs.

This is our most winnable game, you probably need 3 wins to get through.

Win this and you just need 2 more wins from 7 further games.

The time for rotating is much later on.

  7. Surprised not to see us rotate at all, we’re going to have to start doing so at some point soon to be ready for the long season ahead. That said, I suppose it is a marquee game being our first in the CL (even if it’s one of the potentially weaker sides we’ll face). We rotated hard in our first game of the conference league last season and got turned over in Warsaw, perhaps Unai wants to make absolutely sure we start things off with a bang.

  8. Honestly, the more I look at it, the more it makes sense. Young Boys, while not to be underestimated, aren’t the best squad we’ll face by a long shot. Duran is just waiting for a huge breakthrough and I hope we see that either against Bayern or Juve, where I doubt Unai won’t start him. On the other hand, looking at our next fixtures up until Bayern, we have a cakewalk both in the League (struggling Wolves side and Ipswitch) and in the Cup (League One side). I am very excited and hopeful for this side and we should be able to go far.

I am getting a little concerned about our complete lack of squad rotation this season. We added a bunch of depth to the squad only to make no changes that weren’t forced by injury the entire season. Why do we have two keepers on the bench? Why did we make such a huge effort to bring Philogene back only to have him barely play so far this season and not even be on the bench for this match? What is he thinking? The team sold him on how much they wanted him back and how Emery kept saying constantly how much of a mistake it was to let him go the previous season. Did he pick up an injury over the past couple days?

It’s a long season and even if the starters aren’t tired *yet*, we still need to get all the rotation players active so that they’re ready when they get called on as the season keeps going.

  10. Maybe the plan is gain control, tire them out and throw on 3 rapid players in Maatsen, Nedeljkovic, and Duran to finish the game off?

  11. Is there a way of saying “let’s smash these young boys” without finding oneself on a register?

  12. Would have probably given Ned and Duran a start, but can’t complain at all with this lineup! Let’s go!

Young boys are not gonna be a push over. They are here on merit.

We got our eyes wiped in the conference league by being arrogant.

Glad Unai has put out a strong team. Great options off the bench. 2-1 villa.
