Gavi FDJ in the pivot. Olmo in the 10.
Casado sub for Gavi. Pedri sub for FDJ. Fermin sub for Olmo.

Olmo should be an undisputed starter.
Any answer that doesn’t include Olmo is straight up wrong.

De Jong could be insanely good for us. He was the star of the legendary Ajax of Ten Hag and they played the exact same style as Flick. This style is natural for him he no longer has to be too restrained by the more conservative style we had with Xavi.
I’d like to try De Jong – Pedri in the pivots and Olmo in the attacking midfield zone. Or De Jong – Pedri, and Gavi in the attacking midfield zone but we don’t know yet how Gavi will return.

Hard to say now without seeing how some of our injured players do under Flicks system. For example, I’m interested to see how FDJ would do. His best games for Ajax were played when he was in a double pivot.

When fit, Olmo is the best midfielder in the world, and at worst, he’s comfortably in the top 5. He’s exceptional in creating, scoring, providing the X-factor, and offering defensive solidity—practically the only guaranteed starter.
As for the defensive midfielder role, nothing has changed since the days of Xavi or, if you prefer, Pep Guardiola as a player. The heart of the midfield is its intelligence; the positioning and game IQ of a defensive pivot are absolutely essential.
For those who believe Gavi or FDJ can fill this role, it’s not ideal because neither has the necessary positional discipline. It’s not a flaw in their game—they’re simply box-to-box midfielders. FDJ leans more toward the deep-lying playmaker spectrum, while Gavi is a mezzala.
In smaller games, you could get by with a makeshift FDJ-Gavi/Pedri double pivot, but it’s not ideal. For a big match, I’d go with Pedri, Casado, and Olmo in midfield.
But these can ofcourse change depending upon the form of a player.
