Dermot Gallagher says that Bruno Fernandes shouldn’t have been sent off for his challenge with James Maddison – “I think the referee was led, and in my view he was led incorrectly. If you pull all your resources together (VAR monitor/Assistant), I think you would come to a far different decision. “

  1. my personal, neutral view (well slightly because fuck spurs), was that the ref wasn’t wrong to send him off. He falls but still lunges out and catches maddison up high. However, if VAR intervened and it was downgraded to a Yellow it would be completely justified. I think both outcomes are viable given the circumstances.

  2. Even the people who are saying its definitely a red have to admit its an incredibly soft red card.

    Personally I don’t think it’s a red card offense.

  3. VAR Is for conformation. Not decisions. The refs made the call. Was it a clear and obvious error? No, high boot studs up. Soft? Maybe. When a player is slipping don’t lash out with you boot.

From one of the views (Bruno facing the camera), I thought no way a red

But the other view from behind, you can kinda see that he doesn’t pull out of the tackle despite slipping

So imo it is a red

But I do proper despise the fact that because the ref gave it, VAR will never overturn it. Literally what it’s fucking there for but never mind logic

  5. Looked harsh in the moment so can understand the ref giving it red. Immediately clear from the replay though that whilst a lazy attempt at a trip, it wasn’t dangerous or out of control, or reckless so should have been yellow.

Almost exactly what we have VAR for but the PGMOL in their infinite wisdom decide not to use it like that, in fact actively stepping down it’s use this season.

Then again, Gallagher is a muppet anyway so hard to give him any credit or authority. Compare his response to the Rice and Trossard second yellows to his when presented with Ndidi doing the exact same thing for Leicester against Arsenal while on a yellow.

“Cant give those or players would be sent off every week”

Hmmm, indeed Dermo. Strange you said….the exact fucking opposite for the other incidents though.

  6. I am really struggling to understand what counts as dangerous in football anymore.

It was bad enough with the incidents where players have gone absolutely flying in like kamikaze pilots just barely missed their opponents (peaking with Martinez trying to use Kamada’s leg as a pogo stick last week) but now we have a situation where Fernandes has slipped, is out of control, still swings a leg at Maddison with studs showing and actually makes contact (and it’s pure fluke it was ankle first rather than studs first contact)

So if being clearly out of control and making contact with an opponent doesn’t count as a dangerous tackle then what the fuck does?

  7. For all the weird decisions he hasn’t challenged he chooses this one to challenge? Honesty baffling
