Defensive set up for all 3 goals

  1. All 3 of these seem very unlike us and also very preventable. In all 3 we have numbers back, and should be more than capable of dealing with the situations.

People suggesting he should have made some sort of tactical tweaks but we didn’t really look exposed for any of the goals, our defence just completely lost their heads.

Not sure if it’s a positive that these kind if goals are rare and you can chalk it down to a bad day at the office. Or if its concerning that usually reliable VDV Romero and Udogie seemed to just stop playing.

I don’t think it was a matter of tactics. It was a matter of loss of morale, defensive mistakes and just switching off.

  3. To me, both VdV and Udogie looked like they were struggling with issues. And issues on the left side of defence were large factors in all three goals – failing to clear the cross for the first, failing to win challenges and provide adequate cover for the second, and again, failure to win challenges for the third (compounded by Romero switching off).

There was a moment in the first half where VdV simply let his striker run off him, for no real reason. It looked like either he thought he was deeper than he actually was and he was trying to play an offside trap when the player was clearly onside, or he didn’t want to hit high gear because he didn’t trust his body.

And Udogie very obviously wasn’t in suitable condition to play – he looked like his priority was getting through the game without tweaking something, because he didn’t want to risk missing another international.

  4. This is why I think being critical of Ange is a bit nonsense.

He isn’t playing centre back here, unless I’m mistaken.

All this highlights for me, is that we may need some more depth out back. Is that his fault? Possibly, and if it is, *that* is a fair criticism. But, let’s be real, we made the biggest transfer of the window, it’s reasonable to not make a billion pounds worth of signings in one swing just because we need it.

1st goal unlucky double miskick, 3rd goal everyone ball watching, we didnt lose because of tactics, mostly because of individial mistakes. I hope the team will learn from this and give 100% in both halves, I’m still not worried at all about the whole season, we are playing much better than the points suggest

  6. I think the first goal fucked us up in a lot of ways. 2-0 is not a good lead, we conceded right after half time, which is the worst time to concede, so then we were only up by one, that instantly galvanizes their players and their fans and puts fear in ours. This is especially true when it’s not a good goal, like a long shot or a good passing move, it was a comedy goal which hurt Udogie’s confidence and he lost his head in other situations right after that. I don’t think we ever concede 3 that quick if that first goal doesn’t happen.

But the team has to figure out how to react in those situations because these things can and will happen and a galvanized Brighton team is one of the most dangerous sights in football and we have to be ready to deal with that. We did it at home last season but that’s different because the fans were on our side…

That last one was the worst for me. You can see 6 of our players around the ball + 2 by wellbeck and somehow it gets across and wellbeck has a free header? Please make this make sense

Something worth noting: the American commentary was extremely critical of both teams’ high lines and attributed everything that went wrong to them. In our case, I think that they were well off the mark, and it seems like a lot of us think the same. But I think a big reason why there’s so much talk about it is that this was what some of us were hearing for 90 minutes.

It’s fairly obvious that a good number of American broadcasters are out of their depth even when calling premier league games and just resort to cliche and surface level talking points; there are a few exceptions but they’re definitively not the rule

  9. Brighton played a high line too and in fact commentators were shitting on them for it in the first half. The main contributor to our loss was Ange refusing to make subs until the 78th minute when three goals had gone in, that’s it.

Ange wouldn’t need to drastically alter his tactical approach to sub in Bissouma and Sarr earlier or to bring on Dragusin, Gray, Spence, and/or Bergvall. Our attacking options on the wing were limited so I can understand keeping Deki on despite his obvious fatigue. However, keeping Maddison on until the 85th minute and letting Romero and Udogie play the full 90 when they were all obviously tired is irrational. You can only expect players to push through mental and physical fatigue for so long, eventually they’ll hit a wall. Fresher legs and minds likely could have prevented at least 1 of these goals.
