Cole Palmer’s goal record for Chelsea, centrally versus out wide

  1. Got to remember the context of these stats.

He played out wide at the start when the team was in complete turmoil under Poch and losing every other game.

He was moved centrally when things were starting to come under control defensively under Poch at the end when we started to win and has stayed there since.

I would say the context of the team’s situation when he was playing those positions plays a lot more into the difference in the stats than his position. Let’s not also forget that when he was playing RW (exclusively under Poch) he was playing outside of Gallagher, he’s going to be starved for assists when his closest attacking pairing is Gallagher, compared to it now being real attackers.

  2. Ok-Constant-6056 on

Naturally central players do create more and thus assist more. That being said the difference is negligible. Really speaks volumes for his performance.

  3. He’s still so effective on the right and we’re completely wasting Nkunku, would love to see him shift back out and get Nkunku in behind Jackson

  4. His bias towards occupying the right side of the field when playing in no10 role means that Madueke will always look more threatening going forward than Sancho. Sancho often has to do it all alone from deep whereas Madueke receives the ball further up running down the wing due to this bias. Also doesn’t help that Cucu offers very little going forward, and isnt asked to do so in this system, as compared to Gusto/James. I fear this lop sided attacking threat may not be ideal in the long run for our left wingers.

  5. Personally, I don’t like to see him played out wide as he doesn’t seem to influence the game as much. But I would be curious to hear from him which one he prefers and how much more..

  6. Should also note that his central games are predominantly recent ones and his games off the right were more clustered around the start. The players around him have settled, got better, better ones have signed etc over time. Palmer himself also took a little time to settle here and progressively got more effective/better last season. I’d take this post to say that he’s very effective from both RW and AM, nothing more. It’s too small of a sample with too many other factors potentially playing a part to be making conclusions like “Palmer is objectively, definitively better in the middle than from the right.”

And I know people doing that will lead to this narrative of “Palmer’s a 10, not a winger” being perpetuated. We have a very good, very versatile player on our hands, treat him as such.

I know I’ll get people that disagree with me on this but I’d really encourage you to use some critical thinking here. You have to understand stats to use them. The sample is so small that if Palmer played another game at RW and got like 3 assists, this graphic would look basically identical on both sides. That tells you why you can’t be drawing definitive conclusions from it.

He’s very very good, and he’s very very good in two different positions (primarily because both positions allow him to get into the right half space). That’s about all people should need to take from this.
